Visitor/Tourist Accidents

Fisherman's WarfAccording to the report in the San Francisco Chronicle "It was a postcard perfect afternoon in San Francisco, and a young Canadian tourist stood at the rear of a crowded cable car snapping pictures of Nob Hill. Then, without warning, an empty cable car parked at the cable car barn on Washington and Mason streets broke loose and crashed into the vehicle carrying 21-year-old Meyrick Jones and a friend. Jones, a resident of Vancouver, British Columbia, was one of seven people hurt in the collision Thursday evening, and the most severely injured. He was trapped between the two cable cars for 90 minutes while rescuers cut through the vehicles to free him. A few hours after the crash, doctors had to amputate Jones' left leg below the knee. His right ankle was also damaged, and he remains in fair condition at San Francisco General Hospital."

As San Francisco's pre-eminent personal injury firm, we were chosen to represent Mr. Jones in his case against the Municipal Railway.

But it is not only MUNI that poses a hazard to visitors. Fisherman's Wharf also has its hazards. Last year, a Baylink ferry carrying 142 passengers had just backed out of Pier 41 for a run to Vallejo when it lost steering control. Many were injured.

Before that, a Red and White Fleet ferryboat bound in thick fog for San Francisco from Sausalito rammed into a seawall near Aquatic Park, causing injuries to 17 passengers. Eight passengers were treated by fire and ambulance crews that were waiting when the boat docked 10 minutes later, and nine other passengers were taken to hospitals. said U.S. Coast Guard Petty Officer Jeff Murphy. Twenty-eight of the passengers on board -- including six of those injured -- were traveling with a German tour group.

We have a long tradition of representing tourists and visitors to the Bay Area who are injured during their stay.

Our cable car negligence group successfully represented Mr. Jones who was visiting from Canada when his leg was lost due to Municipal Railway negligence. That settlement exceeded $4,000,000.

Our transportation team negotiated a 2,000,000 settlement on behalf of a 12-year-old boy from New York who was visiting San Francisco with a church group and fell from his bicycle during an outing, striking his head on the pavement. The child, who was inexperienced as a bike rider, fell descending a steep street leading from the Golden Gate Bridge. The group had rented bicycles at San Francisco's Wharf, but had not been provided with helmets as required by law. When our client fell, he sustained a left cerebral hemorrhage, resulting in right-sided paralysis. The settlement negotiated on his behalf included payment for past and future medical bills, as well as the costs associated with special schooling and rehabilitative care.

And our airport shuttle negligence team negotiated a settlement in excess of $2,500,000 on behalf of a passenger who was riding in a shuttle bus with his wife from SFO to San Francisco when the shuttle collided with a fixed object, injuring him and killing his wife. The husband was rushed to the hospital where he was treated for 12 displaced rib fractures, lacerations, a degloved finger, and nerve damage. As a result of his wife's death he also experienced overwhelming grief. Past and future economic damages were estimated to exceed $1 million. The settlement was achieved following deposition discovery.
